The Vintage:
The 2017 vintage started off heavy periodic rainfalls in spring throughout most of the summer months. Luckily, the rainy weather was punctuated by sunny days that allowed the grapes to keep maturing and kept disease pressure under control. Finally, September arrived, and Ontario welcomed steady warm, dry weather. Unseasonably warm, dry conditions continued through October and November, allowing the grapes a welcome break from precipitation and affording time to reach very good ripeness levels.
Tasting Notes
An intense purple, inky colour, this Malbec has a deep nose of figs, blueberry pie, violets and spicy notes of clove, anise and cedar in the background. The palate is rich and savory with a lush creamy texture. Rich, dark flavours of blackberry jam, dark chocolate, wild blueberries on the palate are accented by savoury spice wrapped up with a silky texture framed with soft tannin and delicate acidity. Drinking beautifully now, this wine can age in bottle to 2026.
Technical Notes:
100% Malbec harvested from a single vineyard in the Lincoln Lakeshore sub appellation of Niagara. Grapes came into the winery and were left to cold soak on the skins for 8 hours prior to crushing. The must was fermented in stainless steel tank before being pressed and transferred to 1 year old and seasoned oak barrels. The barrel mix was predominantly French oak with 20% of American in the mix. After 22 months of aging, the wine was then racked out of barrel, blended and bottled August 2019.
