The Vintage:
The 2019 Vintage was a wild ride for Niagara, the season started with a cool, wet spring that put the vintage generally behind by about two weeks across all appellations. The peak summer months were warm and sunny, with several heat waves that brought high humidity across southeastern and southwestern Ontario, and with some disease pressure in the vineyards. The harvest season was chaotic weather wise, with warm spells in September, intermitted rainy periods and sudden cold snaps in October and November, keeping winemakers on their toes.
Tasting Notes:
A fruity and perfumed bouquet of cherry compote, raspberry jam, lavender and fresh cracked pepper accented by savory oak notes of vanilla, cedar and toast. The palate is medium bodied and elegantly structured with flavours of blackberry jam, fit, tart blueberry and toasty oak notes ending in a lengthy finish balanced by moderate tannin and delicate acidity.
Technical Notes:
A blend of 56% Cabernet Franc, 40% Merlot and 4% Syrah, harvested from select vineyards in the western end of the Niagara Peninsula at an average of 21°. Fruit came in ripe with good acidity and flavour concentration. The individual grape varieties were separately pressed and put into and combination of stainless steel tank and 1 tonne bins for fermentation with twice daily punch-down of the caps. After fermentation the wine was put into a combination of new and seasoned French and American oak and left to age for 20 months prior to final blending and bottling which occurred August 2021.
